Hammond 1182Q9 120 VA Toroidal Transformer, 18V CT or 9V Output

The 1182Q9 is a 120 VA toroidal power transformer built around two 9 V secondaries, each rated 6.67 A. Wired in series it gives 18V C.T. @ 6.67A; wired in parallel it gives 9V @ 13.34A. It is aimed at engineers who need a compact 9 V or 18 V center-tapped source that runs from either 117 VAC or 234 VAC.

The drawing specifies #20 TEW primary leads and #14 TEW secondary leads, all brought out 8"-9" and stripped 0.5" minimum. Windings are identified by colour: primaries BLK-WHT and BRN-ORN, secondaries RED-BLU and GRY-YEL. Regulation is 9.00% per the series table (dimension reference E). This open-center unit is supplied with two 0.062" x 2.50" OD rubber washers, an 18GA x 2.375" OD steel mounting washer and a 10-24 bolt 2.00" long with lock washer and nut. It ships at 3 lbs (1.36 kg).

The toroid core gives the benefits the series is built around: low profile, light weight, cool running and high efficiency, and low stray magnetic flux leakage (low EMI). Materials are Class B (130 degree C), each unit is hi-pot tested at 4,000 VAC RMS primary to secondary, and the series holds UL recognition (UL 5085-1 / UL 5085-2, file #E207860) and CSA certification (C22.2 #66.1-6 / #66.2-6, file #209651). RoHS and REACH compliance are both listed for this part.

For installation, connect the two 117 V primaries in parallel for 117 VAC or in series for 234 VAC, 50/60 Hz. The series is designed to have all windings engaged, either series or parallel connected, or connected as an autotransformer, and a connection sheet is included with the transformer. Toroids can draw a high magnetizing current when first energized, so a slow-blow fuse, time-delayed circuit breaker or other soft-start circuit on the supply line is recommended.
