Hammond 1182Q12 160 VA Toroid Transformer, 24V CT or 12V Output

The 1182Q12 is a 160 VA toroid transformer with two 12 V secondaries of 6.67 A each. Series connection yields 24V C.T. @ 6.67A and parallel connection yields 12V @ 13.34A, so one part covers both 12 V high-current and 24 V center-tapped designs on 117 VAC or 234 VAC mains.

Leads are #20 TEW on the primary and #14 TEW on the secondary, 8"-9" long and stripped 0.5" minimum, with secondaries coded RED-BLU and GRY-YEL. The series table lists 7.70% regulation and dimension reference F. This open-center toroid comes with two 0.062" x 3.75" OD rubber washers, one 16GA x 3.56" OD steel mounting washer and a 1/4-20 bolt 2.50" long with lock washer and hex nut. Shipping weight is 3.6 lbs (1.63 kg).

Every transformer in the 1182 series is manufactured using Class B (130 degree C) materials and hi-pot tested at 4,000 VAC RMS between primary and secondary. The series is UL recognized to UL 5085-1 and UL 5085-2 (UL file #E207860), CSA certified to C22.2 #66.1-6 and C22.2 #66.2-6 (CSA file #209651), and self-declared as evaluated to applicable sections of IEC/EN61558-1 and IEC/EN61558-2-4. This part is listed as RoHS and REACH compliant.

Wiring is straightforward: the primaries go in parallel for 117 VAC operation or in series for 234 VAC, at 50 or 60 Hz, and a connection sheet ships with the unit. All windings should be engaged (series or parallel) or the unit connected as an autotransformer. Because of the toroid's magnetic properties, inrush at switch-on can sometimes blow a fuse or trip a breaker, although the overload rarely lasts longer than half a cycle; the manufacturer advises a slow-blow fuse, time-delay breaker or soft-start circuitry.
