The HL-2000A is a Hammond HF linear amplifier from around 1980, listed by the manufacturer as no longer in production. This page is a reference for amateur radio operators, restorers and collectors working with this two-tube model.
It uses two Eimac 3-500Z zero bias triodes operated AB2 in grounded grid service and covers the 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter amateur bands (modification required for U.S. models). Ratings are SSB 2 KW PEP input and CW, RTTY, AM and ATV 1 KW input, at continuous duty. An SSB/CW switch optimises efficiency in all modes: SSB runs 2,900 VDC plate voltage minimum and CW 2,100 VDC minimum, both with resting current. Drive power is 75 to 125 watts.
The input circuit is 50 ohm Pi-input circuitry for each band and the output is a full Pi-L network. Cooling is forced air through a pressurized plenum and chimney using a continuous duty, low noise 60 cfm squirrel cage blower, and a time delay circuit cools the tubes down after power has been removed to extend the life of the 3-500Z triodes. Power comes from a special Hammond high voltage transformer designed for continuous duty at 1,100 VA, 60 Hz (28 lbs), a separate Hammond filament transformer and computer grade capacitors.
- Line voltage: 120 VAC or 240 VAC (240 VAC recommended)
- ALC: adjustable (negative) to -8 VDC
- Soft back-lit metering: left multimeter (high voltage, grid current, forward power 2KW or reflected power 200W), right meter fixed on plate current
- Interlock for input AC, 100% fused AC line and cathode circuit, primary HV and filament surge suppression
Overall dimensions are 9.25 in (235 mm) high, 17.25 in (438 mm) wide and 16.38 in (416 mm) deep, or 8.50 x 17.00 x 16.00 in (216 x 432 x 406 mm) less cabinet. The HL-2000A weighs 75 lbs (34 kg), or 87 lbs (39 kg) with cabinet.
Ideal For
- HF amateur radio amplification on 80 to 10 meters
- SSB, CW, RTTY, AM and ATV operation
- Restoration and servicing of classic Hammond linear amplifiers
- Pairing with the AT-1500 antenna transmatch
