  • Circa 1980 design, no longer in production

The HL-1000A is a Hammond HF linear amplifier from around 1980, listed by the manufacturer as no longer in production. The original 1980 manual describes it as a one-stage, self-contained table top unit capable of 1000 watts input, and this page serves as a reference for restorers and collectors.

It uses a single Eimac 3-500Z zero bias triode operated AB2 in grounded grid service. Band coverage is the 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter amateur bands (modification required for U.S. models). Ratings are SSB 1 KW PEP input, CW and RTTY 1,000 W input and AM 500 W input to allow sufficient headroom, all at continuous duty. Drive power is listed as 40 to 75 watts on the current series sheet and 75 to 125 watts in the 1980 brochure. Plate voltage is 2,400 VDC minimum with resting current, and intermodulation distortion is in excess of -33 dB.

The input circuit is 50 ohm Pi-input circuitry for each band and the output is a full Pi-L network. Cooling is forced air through a pressurized plenum and chimney, using a continuous duty, low noise 60 cfm squirrel cage blower. A special Hammond high voltage transformer designed for continuous duty at 800 VA, 60 Hz (21.5 lbs) and a separate Hammond filament transformer feed a supply with computer grade capacitors. Safety features include an interlock for input AC, a 100% fused AC line and cathode circuit, and primary HV and filament surge suppression.

  • Line voltage: 120 VAC or 240 VAC
  • ALC: adjustable (negative) to -8 VDC
  • Soft back-lit metering: left multimeter (high voltage, grid current or relative forward RF power, 1 KW), right meter fixed on plate current
  • Front panel by-pass standby switch and DC antenna relay for hum-free operation

Overall dimensions are 9.25 in (235 mm) high, 17.25 in (438 mm) wide and 16.38 in (416 mm) deep, or 8.50 x 17.00 x 16.00 in (216 x 432 x 406 mm) less cabinet. It weighs 56 lbs (25 kg), or 68 lbs (31 kg) with the steel cabinet, and can be rack mounted on a rack shelf with proper ventilation.

Ideal For

  • HF amateur radio amplification on 80 to 10 meters
  • SSB, CW, RTTY and AM operation
  • Restoration and servicing of classic Hammond linear amplifiers
  • Pairing with the AT-1500 antenna transmatch
