Key Features

  • Conductive plastic molded with stainless steel fibers for EMI/RFI shielding
  • Square 56 x 56 mm (2.20 x 2.20 in) footprint, 40 mm (1.57 in) deep per ordering table
  • Flame retardant ABS compound rated UL94 V-0
  • Designed to meet IP54
  • Thick wall: 0.13 in (3.3 mm) average per series; 3.10 mm on drawing
  • Countersunk lid with four M3-0.5 x 18mm screws into integral brass bushings
  • Black matte textured finish; REACH and RoHS compliant

The 1594RFIABK is the smallest size in the 1594RFI thick-wall enclosure family: a square, black plastic box molded from conductive plastic for EMI/RFI shielding applications. It is aimed at electronics designers and OEM engineers who need a compact housing for a small circuit that must emit less interference, or be less affected by outside interference, without moving to a metal case.

The material is a conductive compound of stainless steel fibers and flame retardant ABS plastic, carrying a UL flammability rating of 94V-0. The walls are thick, with an average wall thickness of 0.13 in (3.3 mm) quoted for the series and 3.10 mm on the part drawing, and the outside has a matte textured black finish. The material is brittle, similar to phenolic, so it is not for high impact use.

The ordering table lists this size at 2.20 in (56 mm) long by 2.20 in (56 mm) wide by 1.57 in (40 mm) deep, while the part page gives a nominal 2.2 x 2.2 x 1.1 in (56 x 56 x 28 mm). The drawing shows a narrowest inside dimension of 46.67 mm and an inner box height of 34.30 mm. It ships at 0.13 lbs (0.06 kg).

The countersunk lid is secured with four M3-0.5 x 18mm long Philips machine screws threaded into integral brass bushings, and the enclosure is designed to meet IP54. Replacement screws come in packs of 100 as 1594MS100. Because the case is conductive, treat 1594RFIABK like a metal enclosure: it is not an insulator, and significant current flow will heat the plastic and produce smoke. It is REACH and RoHS compliant.

Ideal For

  • EMI/RFI shielding for small circuit boards
  • Compact shielded housing for wireless-sensitive electronics
  • Replacing a metal box where a plastic shielded enclosure is preferred

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the 1594RFIABK?▾

The ordering table lists it at 2.20 in (56 mm) long, 2.20 in (56 mm) wide and 1.57 in (40 mm) deep. The part page gives a nominal size of 2.2 x 2.2 x 1.1 in (56 x 56 x 28 mm), and the drawing shows a narrowest inside dimension of 46.67 mm.

How is the lid fastened?▾

The countersunk lid is secured with four M3-0.5 x 18mm long Philips machine screws threaded into integral brass bushings. Replacement screws are sold in packs of 100 as part number 1594MS100.

Can this conductive plastic enclosure be treated like an ordinary insulating plastic box?▾

No. The safety notes state that conductive plastic is NOT an insulator and these enclosures must be treated like a metal enclosure. Significant current flow through the case will cause the plastic to heat and produce smoke.

Is it suitable for rugged, high-impact locations?▾

No. The material is brittle, similar to phenolic, and is not for high impact use. The enclosure is designed to meet IP54.

Will using a shielded enclosure guarantee my product passes EMC testing?▾

No. The shielding information notes that government regulations cover the finished product only, and using an enclosure with inherent shielding will not guarantee compliance; it can enhance performance with respect to EMI/RFI compliance.
