Key Features

  • 1000 VA toroidal power transformer for chassis mounting
  • Dual secondary: 117V @ 8.5A in parallel or 234V C.T. @ 4.3A in series
  • Dual 117/234 VAC primary for 50/60 Hz operation
  • Low profile: 6.50 in (165 mm) outside diameter x 3.50 in (89 mm) high
  • Potted centre for extra mounting strength; includes bottom rubber pad and 3/8-16 x 3.50 in hardware
  • Minimum 8 in flexible leads; Hi-Pot tested at 4,000 V RMS primary to secondary
  • CSA C22.2 #66, UL 506 recognized and CE IEC 950 certified series; RoHS and REACH compliant

The 182R117 is a 1000 VA low-voltage toroidal power transformer from the 182 Series, built for chassis mounting in equipment that runs from 117 VAC or 234 VAC mains at 50/60 Hz. Its dual secondary windings can be connected in parallel for 117V at 8.5A, or in series for 234V centre-tapped at 4.3A, making it a flexible choice for engineers designing linear power supplies and OEM equipment around a 117V or 234V C.T. rail.

The toroidal design keeps the unit low profile, lightweight and cool running thanks to its high efficiency. The dual primary is wired in parallel for 117 VAC or in series for 234 VAC, and the units are designed to have all windings engaged. Minimum 8 in long flexible leads simplify wiring, and each design is Hi-Pot tested at 4,000 V RMS between primary and secondary.

The transformer measures 6.50 in (165 mm) in outside diameter and 3.50 in (89 mm) high, and weighs 16.49 lb according to the series table (shipping weight 21.5 lbs (9.75 kg)). Mounting is by a single centre hole, and this unit has a potted centre for extra mounting strength. It is supplied with one bottom rubber insulating pad and mounting hardware, including a 3/8-16 bolt 3.50 in long.

The 182 Series is CSA certified to C22.2 #66 (file 209651), UL recognized to UL 506 (file E207860) and CE certified to IEC 950; this part is also listed as RoHS and REACH compliant. Because toroidal transformers can draw a high magnetizing inrush current for up to about half a cycle at switch-on, Hammond advises a slow-blow fuse, time-delayed circuit breaker or soft-start circuitry on the supply line.

Note: the manufacturer lists 182R117 as replaced with 1182R117, and the 182 Series is being discontinued as a stocked series in favour of the 1182 Series, available while quantities last.

Ideal For

  • Linear power supply builds needing 117V or 234V C.T.
  • Chassis-mounted OEM equipment powered from 117 VAC or 234 VAC, 50/60 Hz
  • Low-profile installations with about 3.50 in of height available
  • Equipment designs requiring CSA certified and UL recognized transformers

Frequently Asked Questions

What secondary voltages does the 182R117 provide?▾

Its dual secondary gives 117V @ 8.5A with the windings in parallel, or 234V centre-tapped @ 4.3A with the windings in series (RMS values).

Can it run on both 117 V and 234 V mains?▾

Yes. The dual primary is connected in parallel for 117 VAC or in series for 234 VAC, for 50/60 Hz operation.

What mounting hardware is included?▾

It uses center single hole mounting with a potted center, and is supplied with one bottom rubber insulating pad and mounting hardware; the included bolt is 3/8-16 thread, 3.50 in (89 mm) long.

How big is the 182R117?▾

It measures 6.50 in (165 mm) outside diameter by 3.50 in (89 mm) high and weighs 16.49 lbs per the series table; the listed shipping weight is 21.5 lbs (9.75 kg).

Why might my fuse blow when the transformer is switched on?▾

Toroidal transformers can draw high magnetizing current when first energized, limited only by the primary's low DC resistance, for rarely longer than half a cycle. Hammond recommends a slow-blow fuse, time delayed circuit breaker or soft start circuitry.

Is this part still current?▾

The manufacturer lists it as replaced with 1182R117. The 182 Series is being discontinued as a stocked series in favour of the 1182 Series and is available while quantities last.
