- C UL & UL listed (File #E211544); RoHS and REACH compliant
The Hammond 176D is a 500VA plug-in step-up autotransformer that raises 115VAC to 230VAC at 50 or 60 Hz. It suits technicians, integrators and labs running 230V equipment from a standard North American outlet, where the equipment is already isolated and only a voltage change is required.
It uses a single winding and does not provide isolation. The input is circuit breaker protected, and the unit is hi-pot tested to 2 KV RMS. The 176D is rated 500VA (its short description reads 550VA) and moves to the larger 3.80 in by 4.68 in frame. The series table lists 10 lbs, while the shipping weight is 13.3 lbs (6.03 kg).
Input is through a 5 foot cord with a standard grounded North American plug (NEMA 5-15P). Because of U.L. changes in 2007, production after the first part of 2008 replaced the European (Schuko) output with a one foot long "pig tail" cord and a standard North American 3-wire, 250V receptacle (NEMA 6-15R). Receptacles have North American pins, and the 298G adaptor series provides international pinout adaptor plugs.
The 176D measures A 3.80 in (97 mm), B 6.00 in (152 mm), C 4.68 in (119 mm), D 3.00 in (76 mm) and E 4.38 in (111 mm). It is C UL and UL listed (File #E211544), RoHS and REACH compliant, and for indoor use only. These units do not convert line frequency.
Ideal For
- Running 230V equipment up to 500VA from a 115V outlet
- Voltage change where equipment is already isolated
- 50 Hz or 60 Hz step-up applications

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 176D isolate the load from the line?▾
No. It is a single-winding autotransformer that does not provide isolation; it is for equipment that is already isolated and only needs a voltage change.
What are the input and output connections on the 176D?▾
Input is a 5 foot cord with a grounded North American NEMA 5-15P plug. Output is a one foot pig tail cord with a North American 3-wire, 250V NEMA 6-15R receptacle.
Does it still have a European (Schuko) outlet?▾
No. Due to U.L. changes in 2007, production after the first part of 2008 uses a NEMA 6-15R pig tail receptacle instead. For international pinouts, see the 298G adaptor series.
Will it convert 60 Hz to 50 Hz?▾
No. It works on 50 or 60 Hz but does not convert line frequency.
What is the capacity of the 176D?▾
It is rated 500VA. The short description lists 550VA, while the long description and series table list 500VA.
